Beth J Ross
“Walking back from the garage after dropping off her car for repair, Beth wandered into and around the Triangle. Intrigued by the artworks, she found out more about the history of the place and its community, meeting and talking to some of the residents. Drawn to the closed corner shop and finding little in the library, she posted a photo on Facebook, and asked for people’s memories of it. She found out it had been a general store, a grogg shop, a tattoo parlour, a sweet shop and a second hand shop. Beth wanted to draw attention to the memories of the people who would have crossed the threshold of the shop over the years, the repetition of their thoughts, moods, feelings and lives, as well as highlighting a space that could be a valuable community asset, but which has remained closed for over 20 years. Her artwork reflects the repetition of people going in and out of the shop whilst playfully referencing her own childhood memories of buying a quarter of “rhubarb and custard” sweets from a similar sweet shop in her hometown.”
