As part of my research for the In-Place project, I took a series of photographs in and around North Shield ‘s Town Centre, spaces currently experiencing considerable change. I have a long-standing interest in abstraction and the way in which culture is often associated (both positively and negatively) with the gentrification or regeneration of urban spaces. The word abstraction can be defined literally as the removal of visual information; I therefore decided to abstract these photographs by uniformly removing the central part of each image. I wanted to create blank spaces which invite the viewer to fill in the gaps and to consider how their own vision of North Shields fits within current proposals for the Town’s future.
This limited edition set of four postcards will be distributed and freely available to the public through libraries, shops, museums and community spaces in North Shields.
